I Am Thankful: A Homework Assignment of Sorts

My sister Gigi challenged me to put my thanks into thoughts. So I decided to share them with you. In reading her post on Thanksgiving I was reminded of a Thanksgiving dinner at my parents house many years ago...

It was time to sit down for a traditional family dinner and our table was appropriately set with china, crystal, turkey, potatoes, and popcorn kernels. Pop corn?! Yes, next to each place setting was a china finger bowl and in each bowl were 2 kernels of popcorn. My mom, in keeping with the themes of Thanksgiving: turkey, Pilgrims, Fall and er...popcorn(not actually introduced to the pilgrims by Native Americans), had decided to start a new tradition. We each stood, in reverent silence, beside our seats waiting for my father's heartfelt, but often long-winded, prayer. When he finally said "amen" my mom announced, in all solemnity(effectively communicating that this was no time to joke) that each kernel represented our thanks. Beginning with herself we were to go around the table and share two things for which we were thankful. I could feel my heart enter the beginning stages of "racing" and could already feel my cheeks turning the slightest shade of pink; and it wasn't even my turn yet. One of the complicated things about my personality is that I don't like to be the center of attention...unless I choose to be. I can tell a good joke or be as loud as the next gal, but when things get serious-I hide. I hide behind my shyness, others, or even busywork. (I have yet to sit through the entire "Happy Birthday" song without turning beet red). Because I knew that sticking my hands in my armpits and looking at my toes wasn't an option I decided to come to terms, as quickly as possible, with the inevitable: I was going to cry. This is how I react under pressure. So when my turn came I stated, quietly and with as little quavering of my voice as possible, the two things I was most thankful for. Sadly I cannot remember exactly what I said, but I'm sure they had something to do with family and togetherness.

So in continuing that tradition and in response to Gigi's article I wanted to share 2 things I am most thankful for:

1. I am thankful for a loving God who has extended to me the ultimate grace of his Son, and saved an imperfect, undeserving sinner for the sole purpose of his glory.

2. I am thankful for my love, my friend, my favorite: my husband. I am grateful that he is as committed to this marriage as I am and has never once shied away from the immense challenges we've faced since embarking on this voyage called marriage. I love you Babe!
